Media Format Spec - Tape
Tuesday, 23 August 2005 21:03

The Following is the Media Format Information Sheet for Media Distribution of slide ad audio on TAPE.

Standard Domestic Audio Cassette Tape is used.

Four track tape players are used to play the tapes in a theatre.

Track 1 and 2 are the stereo audio track.
Track 3 and 4 are used for a AUDIO PULSE. This pulse is used to trigger the automation. (Change of slide.)

As each Cinema has deferent AUDIO PULSE requirements, the AUDIO PULSE information is generated by the projectionist utilising whatever equipment they have.

Note that two different tapes speeds are available.

  • 4.8 domestic tape speed
  • 9.5 Professional Tape speed

The 4.8 tape speed is used as this speed is known to be the most friendly to the cinemas needs. As such, the professional speed is not used for distribution.

Tapes are recorded with DOLBY C noise reduction.

Tape layout

The tape is played out in the following way.

  1. Tapes is told to play
  2. 6 seconds before first audio track.
  3. 1 second followed next audio track.

The Pulses are inserted using the following general rules.

  1. At the start of the tape, a pulse 1 second before the start of audio to load the first slide.
  2. A Pulse during the 1 second of audio between slides. (Load next slide.)
  3. For audio tracks needing multiple slides, pulses should be laid out to suite.

The first Audio track in most cases is a Cinema Intro. This consists of multiple slides over the duration of the track.

Slide ads can have two slides. This is not common.
